Forbes.com Mobile Reader story - Smart Phones, Dumb Security

Forbes.com Mobile Reader user greg450318@gmail.com wanted you to see this:

"Smart Phones, Dumb Security"

The smarter your phone, the dumber criminals need to be to exploit it. That's the message from the annual BlackHat security conference.

Five different security groups presented new research on mobile devices Thursday that focused mostly on Apple's (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) iPhone, Microsoft's (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) Windows Mobile and Google's (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) Android mobile operating systems. Each group approached the problem of securing mobile devices from a different perspective, but most touched on the same theme: As devices become increasingly complex, it's harder for all those technologies to play nice. As a result, it's hard to figure out how the operating systems really work.

"For the first time ever, it's a hot topic," says Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at Helsinki-based security firm F-Secure. "Apple brought out the iPhone, which finally makes smart phones relevant for Americans."

Compared to previous years, the topic of discussion is moving from mobile applications down to the core mobile operating systems themselves. Three of the mobile talks discussed "fuzzing" techniques for diving deeper into system-level code, and many presented tools that will help push forward public mobile security research.

"The good part of fuzzing is that now that it's being done before we have actual real, wide-scale attacks--which we don't have in the mobile world yet--we still have time to fix all the problems," says Hypponen.

A chat by Zane Lackey and Luis Miras demonstrated a way to spoof SMS messages using the GSM wireless technology used by companies like T-Mobile. That flaw would enable attackers to phish for personal information or, for example, fake a message from your boss.

Another talk, given by iSec researcher Jesse Burns, tore apart Google's Android and showed people how to use open-source code to figure out what's going on in their devices. He discussed some common programming errors that lead to vulnerabilities and implored coders to program their applications more securely. Although Android is open-source, the developer community has yet to fully understand it. "They're getting there," he says, "but I want to speed that up."

In a talk by engineers from Flexilis, a Los Angeles-based mobile security firm, researcher John Hering laid out the key factors driving mobile threats: technology advancement, persistent Internet connections and the rise of third-party applications.

Shoehorning complex technologies like wi-fi, BlueTooth and SMS into the same device means that a mobile operating system has to balance a lot of complex technology protocols, a fact that can create unintended consequences that beget security bugs. Always-on devices means that the door is wide open for attack, even while the device is unused and in your pocket.

The proliferation of third-party applications available through places like Apple's App Store and Google's Android Marketplace means that sometime-novice programmers can introduce new flaws that can become a foothold for an attack. Disabling signed code, for example, to jailbreak an iPhone means that the device will happily run malicious code.

While cyber criminals have not yet widely exposed mobile security flaws--F-Secure's Hypponen says the security community has found only 486 malware examples to date--researchers stressed that it's important to identify the potential problems early on. The fact that mobile devices are used for personal and financial information, that flaws are often consistent across millions of devices and that mobile devices are harder to patch, makes a compelling case why mobile security should be a big concern for businesses and consumers.

"Mobile devices, in my opinion, are the most personal computer--it's kind of an extension of yourself," says Hering. "So as sensitive as your desktop is, your mobile device is going to be more sensitive."

Hering's colleague Kevin Mahaffey echoes the concern. "These things are a mobile wallet," he says. "If a single-packet money transfer mechanism isn't incentive, I don't know what is."

A number of tools were released that should give security researchers more transparency into smart phone software, and thus increase the likelihood that bugs will get stomped out. But while the theme of the day was how little security researchers know about how mobile operating systems work, the talks stressed how consumers know even less.

The lesson consumers must learn? Don't be passive about mobile security. Update your device to the latest firmware. Disable protocols like BlueTooth are not essential, and don't install needless applications. "My advice is don't wait," says Hering. "Staying on top of that is really going to help you."

Forbes.com Mobile Reader story - Twitter's PowerPoint Positioning

Forbes.com Mobile Reader user greg450318@gmail.com wanted you to see this:

"Twitter's PowerPoint Positioning"

Twitter really wants to speak to businesses--you can tell because they're talking in PowerPoint. The message? Twitter is a tool to converse with your customers on their terms, not yours.

The San Francisco-based communication platform launched Twitter 101 Friday, a how-to for businesses to use the service effectively. Twitter's PowerPoint presentation explains what Twitter is and offers nine case studies of how other businesses are using its service. The project gives an interesting look at how Twitter views itself in terms of a marketing channel: It's a way for customers to reach businesses, not the other way around.

"People are turning to Twitter as an effective way to reach out to businesses," the site says. "Businesses of all kinds, including major brands, increasingly find that listening and engaging on the service leads to happier customers, passionate advocates, key product improvements and, in many cases, more sales."

The message also provided examples of how to leverage Twitter. "In addition to learning more about what your customers want, you can provide exclusive Twitter coupon codes, link to key posts on your blog, share tips for shopping online, and announce specials at store locations," the site reads. Translation: Engage Twitterers on their terms, make them happy using supplemental promotions but don't turn it into a mirror of your other promotional channels.

That positioning jives with Twitter management's vision for the company, as laid bare in the stolen meeting notes published by TechCrunch . In those documents, executives ponder the consequences of mirroring all the world's RSS feeds and chief executive Evan Williams notes that "Twitter is not an alert system."

Forbes.com Mobile Reader story - Natalya Estemirova

Forbes.com Mobile Reader user greg450318@gmail.com wanted you to see this:

"Natalya Estemirova"

In the wake of the abduction and murder of Natalya Estemirova, a human rights defender in Chechnya, on July 15, a curtain of silence has fallen over Chechnya similar to what existed between the two Chechen wars when almost no reporter dared to venture there.

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov will still organize tours for official visitors, of course. But the paralyzing fear that grips this corner of the Russian Federation will go unreported because no one will dare to reveal its source.

Estemirova, a single mother who lived in Grozny, was virtually the sole surviving source of information on torture, abductions and murders carried out by the security services under Kadyrov, a close ally of the Kremlin. Now, there is no one to take her place. In recognition of this, the Chechen branch of the Memorial Society, for which Estemirova worked, has closed.

In one of her last meetings with Kadyrov, he virtually foretold Estemirova's death. Estemirova had criticized the policy of compelling young girls in Chechnya to wear head scarves. In response, Kadyrov said, "I'm up to my elbows in blood. But I'm not ashamed of this. I murdered and will murder bad people. We're fighting with enemies of the republic."

At the time of her death, Estemirova was working on two issues that were extremely sensitive for the Chechen authorities, the burning of the homes of relatives of Chechen rebels, including very distant relatives, and the July 7 murder of a man in the village of Akhkinchu-Borzoi. The victim was kidnapped and then brought to the village and shot in front of the villagers who were told that a similar fate awaited anyone who helped the rebels.

Information about the killing in Akhkinchu-Borzoi was particularly damning because public executions in Chechnya during the republic's brief period of independence were used by Russia as an argument for why the Chechen regime should be replaced. At the same time, information about this type of crime rarely leaves the confines of the Chechen republic.

According to the Memorial Society, in the last 10 years there were between 3,000 and 5,000 abductions in Chechnya ending in summary executions. Only one case during this entire period went to trial and resulted in a conviction. This was the case of Sergei Lapin, a police official from Nizhnevartovsk, who was working on temporary assignment in Grozny and in 2001 illegally detained and interrogated Zelimkhana Murdalova, a resident of Grozny. Murdalova was brought to a lockup where the duty officer refused to accept him because of widespread signs of torture. Murdalova was then taken by Lapin in his official car in an unknown direction and is still classified as missing.

Lapin was eventually imprisoned due to the efforts of Anna Politkovskaya, who first reported the case, Stanislav Markelov, the lawyer for the victim's family, and Estemirova. All three have now been murdered. Politkovskaya was shot in the entryway of her apartment building in October 2006 and Markelov was murdered in broad daylight in a crowded street in the center of Moscow in January. Kadyrov is a suspect in the killings of both Politkovskaya and Markelov.

Besides the killings of human rights activists, Kadyrov is a suspect in the killing of Chechen refugees and oppositionists. In March, Sulim Yamadaev, a former Chechen commander and Kadyrov foe, was assassinated in Dubai. On January 14 Umar S. Israilov, a Chechen refugee and former Kadyrov bodyguard, was shot as he left a grocery store in Vienna. He had filed a detailed complaint with the European Court of Human Rights describing the use of abductions and torture by Kadyrov. His killing followed the killing in September 2008 in central Moscow of Ruslan Yamadaev, a former State Duma deputy and the brother of Sulim, and the killing of Movladi Baisarov, another Kadyrov opponent, by Chechen police in Moscow in November 2006.

In the past, both Kadyrov and the Russian leaders have reacted to the killings in which he is a suspect with either demonstrative indifference (no Russian official attended Markelov's funeral) or gruesome attempts at humor. Kadyrov, in the wake of the murder of Politkovskaya, said that he would never kill a woman.

In the case of the murder of Estemirova, however, the Chechen and Russian authorities' public relations techniques have improved. Both Russian president Medvedev and Kadyrov have condemned the murder and promised a thorough investigation. The fact remains, however, that one after another the opponents of Kadyrov are being murdered, the security services in Chechnya are totally controlled by him and the entire republic lives in fear.

Against this backdrop, Putin and Kadyrov are said to have a father-son relationship. This should give U.S. officials pause about placing too much faith in the moral qualities of the leaders in either Moscow or Grozny.

The extent to which Putin and Kadyrov work together is illustrated by billboards in Grozny which show Putin and Kadyrov clasping hands. Beneath them are the words, "They saved the people!"

Forbes.com Mobile Reader story - Technology And The Law

Forbes.com Mobile Reader user greg450318@gmail.com wanted you to see this:

"Technology And The Law"

John Anderson

A decade ago, the most advanced piece of equipment inside many law offices was a fax machine. Fast-forward to the present and IT is now being viewed by many firms as a competitive advantage in speeding up research and keeping in touch with clients.

What started this shift and why has the legal field been so adept at making the transition from legal pads to smart phones and highly integrated back-end systems? Forbes caught up with John Anderson, CIO at Shook, Hardy & Bacon--a global law firm with nine offices and more than 500 attorneys--to talk about the drivers and the changes.

Forbes: How integral is technology to law firms these days?

John Anderson : We have an annual budgeting process where we talk to all of our constituencies to find out if they have the tools to meet their needs. We also have a group of technology partners we work with to make sure we have the proper input from the attorney side. We do regular refreshes of PCs every four years, mobile devices every two years and servers every three to five years.

Is the biggest concern performance or the ability to access records?

Actually, it's both. Historically, performance has been the most important metric. What's changing is access to information and knowledge management--harnessing the various sources of data we have to make it easier to find what we're looking for.

Lawyers spend a lot of time looking up case law. Has that been automated?

Yes. A lot of law firms use online resource tools like WestLaw or Lexis. That allows you to look up case law and it cites the most recent examples of case law pertinent to the topic you're researching. Internally, we also have a large number of prior examples of things we've done before for best practices.

Can it be done with keywords or phrases?

That's right. And what we've implemented in the past two years are even more sophisticated search tools. One we call Super Search, which is our internal branding of the capability. It allows one-stop shopping so that at least five different databases are being searched. You don't have to go to five different sources. You don't need to know how to search five different databases.

But you really want targeted results for that search rather than a general Google-type of response, don't you?

Yes. The Super Search is for our internal sources.

So is the image of an attorney poring through law books in a library outdated?

Definitely. The amount of hard-copy reference materials we carry shrinks every year, and the amount of use of the online resources increases every year. There's definitely a trend toward online, sit-at-your-desk researching.

Is the productivity per lawyer going up because of that?

It's much higher. They're more productive than they've ever been.

How about billing? Is that all automated?

Our system tracks how much time you've spent working on different matters. You can look at your report daily, weekly or monthly for the time spent on a case.

How does mobile computing enter into this?

Every attorney has a mobile device. It's gone from a select number of attorneys having them several years ago to every attorney having them. It's definitely driven by the demand to be responsive to clients. There are surveys that indicate one of the primary reasons a law firm is dropped by a client is lack of timely communication. The PDA allows for rapid response times.

Is there a restriction on what the attorneys can use?

We provide an option of three different BlackBerry devices. But any other device an attorney wants to purchase on their own can be used, as long as it meets our rigid security standards. Most devices do. We have iPhones, Palm and Windows mobile devices, as well as BlackBerrys.

What's involved in your security?

A lot of the security is more inherent on the PCs. The BlackBerrys are easier to secure. They're encrypted. We have passwords on them. If a device is lost, someone can't just pick it up and read it. And once it's identified as lost or stolen, we can remotely wipe all the information off of it. It's called the "kill command."

What kind of infrastructure does that require?

We have the usual HP servers, Cisco network equipment, Dell PCs--desktops and laptops--and for e-mail we use Exchange.

Are the front-end devices tied into the centralized server for billing, as well?

Some people do use their BlackBerrys to send messages, and there are some programs to keep track of how long it took you to type a message. We don't go to that level. But we do have a cost-recovery system called Billback, where phone calls are recorded so that, at the appropriate time, a report can be produced showing time spent on the phone.

As people get more comfortable with the technology, are you getting requests to do things that you didn't do in the past?

On a regular basis I get requests and suggestions. We research all of them. The first thing we consider is security to see if it's even do-able.

What types of requests?

Recently we got a request to do the same thing that Skype does. If you can do videoconferencing or one-to-one with video, that may be an alternative to traveling.
We're now offering the ability to add a camera to your PC. That's through a Microsoft program called Office Communication Server.

Has technology become a competitive advantage?

I think so. We all hear about what the other firms are doing. No one wants to be left behind.

Because of that, are you constantly revamping your technology road map?

Being the technology leader is definitely embraced at all levels here. One of the impacts is increased bandwidth. There's more e-mail and more attachments, and with voice-over IP and video-over IP, that has increased the need for bandwidth.

When did the legal field begin down this path?

About 10 years ago, when e-mail became a necessity, then law firms really began embracing technology. It used to be that a FedEx or fax was adequate timing. Now you need to send an attachment via e-mail. Overnight service is not adequate anymore.

Have the courts caught up?

Some have, some haven't. It varies by state and by district, but many have certain electronic filing requirements now. Some will only take a PDF filing. Word documents need to be converted to PDFs.

Forbes.com Mobile Reader story - Microsoft Bets On Bar Codes

Forbes.com Mobile Reader user greg450318@gmail.com wanted you to see this:

"Microsoft Bets On Bar Codes"

Two-dimensional bar codes are one of those futuristic technologies that always seem to be on the brink of a breakthrough, but never make it.

Promotion from Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ), one of the biggest technology companies in the world, could help. Starting this fall, the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant plans to incorporate bar codes into its Xbox videogames as part of a broad marketing initiative. "[Bar codes] enable advertisers to continue their conversations with consumers across any media [whether] posters, book covers, store displays or screens," says Mark Kroese, general manager of entertainment and devices advertising for Microsoft.

The codes, which are sometimes called QR codes for "quick response," are a sibling technology to the familiar bar codes found on product packaging. 2-D bar codes, however, store data in two dimensions, letting them stash more data than regular bar codes, including information like Web site and e-mail addresses.

Here's how it works: People scan or "snap" the codes with a cellphone camera. The phone's browser then activates and is automatically directed to a designated Web site linked to the code.

Though popular in Japan, where they are viewed as a simple way to pay bills and download videos, 2-D bar codes remain a very niche technology in the U.S.

Could Microsoft nudge bar codes into the mainstream? The company has been interested in the technology for some years. In 2006, it debuted a 2-D bar code product called Windows Live Barcode designed to seamlessly transfer information between computers, billboards and magazines, and mobile devices running its Windows Mobile software.

The next year, Microsoft's research team unveiled a new kind of code known as the High Capacity Color Barcode (HCCB), composed of small, brightly colored triangles in geometric patterns. The changes allowed the size of the tags to be reduced while increasing the amount of information storage and opened the technology to a wider variety of phones, including models with lower-end cameras and lenses, the company says.

The technology didn't take off, but Microsoft kept refining it. At the annual Consumer Electronics Show this past January, the company showed a new product called "Microsoft Tag," based on HCCB. A promotional video called the technology a simple, fast way to "link real life to the digital world." Unlike other codes, Microsoft's tags don't contain information within their code; instead, they act as links to data stored on Microsoft's servers. The structure allows tag creators, such as marketers, to track tag activity.

To encourage consumers to create and use tags, Microsoft also released "TagReader" software compatible with several types of cellphones, including Apple's (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) iPhones, Research In Motion's (nasdaq: RIMM - news - people ) BlackBerrys, Nokia (nyse: NOK - news - people ) Symbian devices and Windows Mobile handsets.

This April, Microsoft fine-tuned the tag technology one more time, adding an option to swap the triangles for dots. The change enables tag creators to better customize the codes' appearance. The dotted tags resemble pointillist images instead of triangle-packed grids. (The tag technology is still technically in beta as Microsoft tweaks it based on usage data and customer feedback.)

Despite Microsoft's efforts and inclusion in promotions from Hardee's and General Mills (nyse: GIS - news - people ), its tags haven't caught on broadly. Microsoft's Xbox implementation will be the first tag embedded in a videogame in the U.S.

A pilot held at Wal-Mart (nyse: WMT - news - people ) earlier this year gave Microsoft confidence in the technology, says Kroese. To publicize the release of an Xbox game called "Halo Wars," the retailer created tag-enabled store displays. Consumers who scanned or "snapped" the tags with their phones were taken to a special Web site where they could pre-order the game and get freebies like ringtones. Microsoft found that 85% of the people who visited the site ended up downloading content onto their phone.

Games are a natural place to put tags, says Kroese. "You've got people who are really engaged, leaning on the edge of their seats ... a tag campaign presents advertising in a way that lets gamers "stay in the moment," he says.

The technology will appear in most of the 10 Xbox titles Microsoft plans to release this fall. Advertisers include operator Sprint Nextel (nyse: S - news - people ), which will use tags in a campaign on Xbox LIVE.

Gamers are likely to see the tags in the same places they currently see regular ads. In a first-person sports game, for instance, players might see a billboard or a banner on the side of racetrack with a tag. Snapping a tag with their phone will yield some kind of reward, such as an outtakes reel of a movie, a phone wallpaper or entrance into a sweepstakes or contest. The bonus could also relate to the game, such as a clue, extra gamer points or special admittance to a secret level.

"There's a currency system that gamers understand, such as points, achievement and secret levels," says Kroese. "We want the tags to be part of the fun instead of a blatant interruption."

Tags won't be limited to new games. Using an in-game advertising platform developed by Microsoft's subsidiary, Massive, marketers could place ads with tags in existing games.

Nor are tags limited to game play. Microsoft plans to put them on game marketing materials, including packaging and posters, and even incorporate them into the release of Windows 7 in late October. A spokeswoman for Microsoft's Tag product team says several companies outside the tech industry will roll out tag campaigns later this year. Procter & Gamble (nyse: PG - news - people ) will employ the technology to promote its Head & Shoulders shampoo, and an unnamed "leading car manufacturer" will use tags in store brochures. The most creative use may be a T-shirt designed for basketball player Kobe Bryant. Fans will be able to snap Bryant's tag-enabled shirt to learn more about the athlete.

Says Kroese: "Tags take everything advertisers are doing and turbocharge it."

Forbes.com Mobile Reader story - Provocative TED

Forbes.com Mobile Reader user greg450318@gmail.com wanted you to see this:

"Provocative TED"

TED never fails to provoke. The big-ideas conference (short for Technology, Entertainment and Design) has been held annually since 1990 in California and is in Oxford, U.K., this week for its third year operating an overseas offshoot. The 700 attendees with gigantic name badges take over the ancient university town.

The first day of presenters wrapped up on Tuesday. The eager audience from 40 countries heard ten 18-minute talks from writers, a graphic designer, an astrophysicist, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and an artist named Willard Wigan who creates astonishingly detailed nano-sculptures that fit inside the eyes of needles. "I have to be careful I don't inhale my work. That has happened to me," he says .

Gordon Brown was the big surprise on the agenda, and he painted an impassioned (for him) vision for how social media and mobile phones can be used to expose tyranny and tie our cultures together. "There is a real moral sense and capacity to communicate instantly," he said. He made appeals for the creation of more engaged global institutions that can solve shared problems such as global warming, financial markets reform and terrorism. But the appeals were rather predictable, and he largely avoided specifics on how to get this done. He also skirted conference host Chris Anderson's questions on how this vision of globally coordinated reforms can be reconciled with rising nationalism and economic self-interest. At least Brown knows the limits of rhetoric: "When Cicero spoke, people turned to each other and said, 'Great speech.' When Demosthenes spoke, people turned to each other and said, 'Let's march.' " The message (to President Obama, perhaps?) is that we need more marching and less speech making.

TED's goal is to spread great ideas, and there were several the first day. Swiss-born writer and self-styled philosopher Alain De Botton talked of snobbery, accomplishment and career anxiety. It is odd to hear a Cambridge-educated intellectual pose serious challenges to meritocracy. "The whole idea that anyone can achieve anything they want in life is a very dangerous notion," he said. Humans are victims of their susceptibility to what people say their role in life should be. His message to the audience was, ultimately, assuring. "Don't give up on the idea of success, but just make sure it is your own. You cannot have it all, so you should take comfort in knowing what your failures are," he said.

Graphic designer and artist Stefan Sagmeister made a wondrous sales pitch for the sabbatical. He closes his New York office every seven years and goes away to recharge, working on personal projects that often reap creative and financial rewards later on. If you can't bring yourself to unplug, his advice is to "put it in your plan book and then tell everyone you're going to do it so you can't chicken out."

The blisteringly witty British writer and actor Stephen Fry was the third speaker on stage, but he should have gone first, as he summed up the nature of the event best, with typical British backhanded affection. TED, he said, "is quaintly self-regarding and preposterously amusing."

Forbes.com Mobile Reader story - The Longest Tweet In History

Forbes.com Mobile Reader user greg450318@gmail.com wanted you to see this:

"The Longest Tweet In History"

On Oct. 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager became the first man to travel faster than the speed of sound. On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister became the first man to run a four-minute mile. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong was the first to set foot on the moon.

Forty years later, Forbes reporter Taylor Buley posted a tweet that was exactly 247 characters long. It is, naturally, a quote from Steve Forbes:

Benjamin Franklin's maxim about the inevitability of taxes is so familiar that it has the ring of a cliche. But it suggests a profound truth: Taxes are a certainty we dread almost as much as death. - Steve Forbes, Flat Tax Revolution, Regnery 2005

Not exactly "What hath God wrought?" No, our message was 225 characters longer. Eat it, Samuel Morse.

So how did Buley do it? Twitter famously doesn't allow messages of more than 140 characters. However, Twitter's programmable API now allows messages up to 247 characters to slip through. All messages are truncated at 136 characters; Twitter then uses the remaining four characters to display a space and ellipsis.

Here's the secret though: The ellipsis is hyperlinked. Clicking it takes you to the single tweet, where all 247 characters can be displayed.

Other's have apparently noticed, too , indicating that the phenomenon might go back as far as May. That tweet, however, cut off at a mere 246 characters.

At the time, the long-winded Tweets were dismissed as bug in the javascript code that published tweets on the Web.

But this is a feature of the programmable Twitter back-end, where it seems that Twitter has made room for 247-character messages. One indication: In the information Twitter returns when posting a message, there's a special name space that indicates whether the message was truncated or not. Another hint is found in the ellipsis: Twitter seems to have deliberately designed a user interface to handle its long-winded tweet pariahs.

Twitter explains its 140-character limit matter-of-factly : "The Twitter message limit of 140 characters was based on the limit of 160 characters imposed by SMS," wrote co-founder Biz Stone in an official blog post. "We just needed some room to include your name in front of the message."

So, is it a bug or feature? We've Twittered a question to the chief Tweets. Start following our tweets at @ ForbesTech to find out.
